Life, which you so nobly serve, comes from destruction, disorder and chaos. [Dec. 14th, 2006|06:54 am]

Well, here it is, finally, Post #2 in the Carnival theme. I have worked on it for the last few months, with a little help/additions (chess-wise) from quest. It will eventually be part of an ongoing storyline that I have some vague ideas about. Others are more than welcome (in accordance with the very purpose of this community), to ask questions about what I have written, and/or contribute their own stories that may or may not follow on from some of this.

Please let me know what you think. I am anxious to know whether or not my writing skills have actually atrophied over the years. I cannot rely upon one person's opinion alone.

Here goes. Enjoy. :)

The sun shone warm and made sparkles glimmer from the surface of the little stream that threaded through the edge of the small, picturesque forest. Rabbit Jack was taking a well-earned bath. The water felt cold and crisp as he splashed it on his body, rubbing his well-worn clothes all over his wiry frame, thusly washing them too in the process. Despite his name, he face was actually more reminiscent of a weasel, albeit, a good-natured one. People seemed to take pity on his humble, beady stare, and lent him money, and invited him to card games. Just enough so he could get by. Not too much to be extravagant, oh no, he wasn’t that foolish, not anymore. He was happy with the life he led. Clean air, nature, food enough when he wanted it. He’d visit any one of many local towns in the area when he wanted human contact, drink, extra food or supplies, maybe the company of a woman. But for now he was happy living out in the natural world away from walls and clocks and expectations.

Read on... I hope it's not what you'd expect. :)Collapse )

Well, eventually, you just have to DO something. So, we'll start the SciFi part of the game here.

The rules are easy. ;-)

1) Let's start establishing the locale. Ideas have flown and I'll post them in this thread as time permits. And thoughts you have and suggestions are more than welcome. Let's just toss the discussion into this thread.

2) Please forward posts my way first, just so I can do a quick look at it? (I'm in no mood to censor or anything. I just want to make sure we're keeping continuity with other folks).

3) When posting, set is up as a new post, with a header/title that includes SF:ST and then the title of the piece itself. (In case you're wondering, I'm boring, it stands for Sci Fi:Story Tapestry). For example: SF:ST Kennedy Explains The Obvious. Someone Key The Airlock?

Beyond that, not a ton. Contact me if you need to. My LJ contact info works.

Yay! Initiative!

Carnival Introduction [Oct. 3rd, 2006|10:24 pm]
Short Story Tapestry Society

As promised, slightly delayed, just begun, and to be retooled (ad nauseam), here is a beginning to a Carnival story. It's meant as an intro, to establish the mood and a few characters. I welcome feedback, both positive and negative. I also welcome anyone else who wants to post a story idea/draft. Please enjoy, or tell me why you didn't.

Upcoming [Sep. 27th, 2006|04:20 pm]
Short Story Tapestry Society

We're still here. Preparations are being made for kickings-off of all three themes - slowish going as the important early decisions are made and directions chosen.

For myself,I'm close to having the beginnings of a story for the Carnival setting, that will establish a few core characters and set a tone for the genre. I'll welcome feedback, both on form and content - we should all be a resource to each other in that respect - and I hope once I have a ball rolling, that others will want to play too.

Thanks for your patience; post a post or a comment, or email me, with any questions or ideas.

Welcome Aboard [Sep. 7th, 2006|10:20 pm]
Short Story Tapestry Society

Thanks to all for signing on for this project. Whether you join as a writer or observer/enthusiast (and we mean to get you writing, too), it will be a fun ride.

For now, the profile page says most of the news that is fit to print. I started this community to create a forum for creating a specific kind of short-story work, but from that jumping-off point we can go in a lot of directions - and there's no need to choose only one.

mercurialmind has signed on as a co-maintainer for the community, both for her design savvy (anything pretty you see on the site is probably because of her) and for her creative input. THANK YOU SMOOCHES.

Plans are in the works for some ways we can get some writing muscles flexing. Meantime, the floor's open to anyone who wants to post character ideas, theme ideas, or work you wanna share. Specifically, for those who have an interest in sci-fi (Point person on that theme, anyone), let's see some ideas bouncing. I'm taking on the Gothic Carnival idea (watch here for more on that), and mercurialmind's theme-of-choice is urban fantasy (Right?).

I'm excited!
